Luca Ghiotto: "I arrived in Baku with zero points last year..."

Picture
If you’re given the opportunity to sit down with a racer like Luca Ghiotto, there’s really only one place to start: are you still looking to win the championship this year? “Yeah, of course,” he states matter-of-factly as we sit down on Thursday ahead of the 4th round of the FIA Formula 2 championship in Baku, Azerbaijan in the hospitality area, before going on to show why his season is already a step ahead of expectations.  Continue

Tatiana Calderon: "My brother says this sport is for girls"

Picture
Tatiana Calderon, who has recently increased her involvement in the FIA’s Women in Motorsport programme in line with the announcement of her GP3 Series drive with DAMS and her appointment as development driver for Sauber F1 Team, has no illusions about her ambitions within the sport which she calls home: “For me I want to beat everybody: not as a woman, but as a racing driver."  Continue

36. Johnny Johnny: Prefab Sprout

Sad songs are just the best songs: that’s simply a fact.  Continue

So close

Picture
With Oliver Rowland closing down Charles Leclerc’s lead in the drivers’ championship to just 3 points in Monaco everyone was watching to see if the Briton could keep pushing and steal a march on his Monegasque rival: after the weekend Rowland announced that the team’s focus would be on improving their qualifying performance to stop Leclerc’s string of pole positions (and the points that come with it), and Round 4 in Baku, Azerbaijan was the perfect place to find out if their ambitions were going to become reality.  Continue

35. Don't Change: INXS

As far as I’m concerned, the video for this song should be nothing but footage of flying over Sydney Harbour.  Continue

34. There She Goes: The Las

It must be tough to make something as perfect as this.  Continue

33. Eye of Fatima: Camper Van Beethoven

I can’t even begin to remember how I found the Campers – they didn’t have any hits, I doubt they were played on radio, they wouldn’t have been big in Melody Maker or any of the other UK music press that I read religiously – but this album was just perfect.  Continue

31. You Spin Me Round: Dead or Alive

This was another Barters’ house song, but Graham always took the lead vocals. It was a huge surprise to us all when he announced he was gay, obviously.  Continue

30. Living in America: James Brown

Yeah, I know this is possibly the worst single he ever put out, from one of the worst movies ever, but we used to dance like maniacs to this song anyway, so screw you.  Continue

29. Groove is in the Heart: Deee-lite

I don’t care: this is one of the greatest dance songs of all time, and if you can’t see that then it’s your problem.  Continue

28. Free Nelson Mandela: The Special AKA

It’s just a brilliant groove, isn’t it? Rolling and rocking and just moving on and on. Kind of like the campaign for Mandela was, I guess, until he was finally released.  Continue

27. Fall at Your Feet: Crowded House

I once made the claim to Will Buxton that Neil Finn is the greatest rock songwriter of our time. And I was right.   Continue

26. Blister in the Sun: Violent Femmes

I’ve always liked a good three piece band (and also always liked The Fauves’ Three Piece  too, even if they were taking the piss out of them)  Continue

25. Been Caught Stealing: Jane's Addiction

It’s not their best song – that’s Just Because – but it’s my favourite of theirs, just because of when it hit.  Continue

24. Policy of Truth: Depeche Mode

Another band for whom it’s impossible to pick just one song: how do you do it, when they’ve got so many stone cold classic tunes?  Continue

23. Relax: Frankie Goes to Hollywood

I really loved the Frankies: there was just something about them that really hit me (with a laser beam) at some primal level. It was probably the bass line.  Continue

22. Blue Monday: New Order

It was always just the perfect song, this: I guess that’s why they kept putting it out, over and over again. Or maybe they were just trying to pay for the sleeve. I had the original, actually, but I love this version because it’s just funny.  Continue

George Russell: “My number 1 priority is GP3”

Picture
Almost every racing driver would love to be in George Russell’s position. A drive with the most successful team in the GP3 Series? Check. Young driver programme with the reigning Formula 1 champions? Check. But how does it feel to be in the young Briton’s shoes? “It definitely gives me a lot of self-confidence, and makes me feel appreciated for my career and the job I’ve done up to that point.”
But getting the deal is only part of the job: now the hard work begins. “Yeah, exactly!"  Continue

21. The One I Love: R.E.M.

I first got into R.E.M. in Los Angeles, in the holding zone for our trip where we were buying bikes and hanging out with Mickey and Scooter, learning how to just be, how to exist without a timetable.  Continue
