I’ve loved this song since the very first time I heard it, for the complete kitchen sink ordinariness of it before the explosion of a chorus, the aural equivalent of that moment when you look at your long-term partner in the middle of the coffee shop as they’re talking about what to have for dinner that night and you remember oh fuck I really love you and your heart skips a beat at the thought, until the guy behind the counter calls your names to collect the coffee.
It’s everyone’s lives in 3 minutes, or at least hopefully, with their mastery of the Pixies quietloudquiet song construction simply a reflection of the dynamics of a life shared. Not very exciting, but you know I love it. The Wannadies were such a great band, sadly another victim of dickhead record labels – Hit deserved to live up to its name too – but at least they had a couple of moments in the sun, albeit mostly after they’d broken up and the rest of the world caught up to them. The Foo Fighters owe them a debt, among many, many others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GatFxNGvfBg
